Important reminders on Swift Codes:

  • SWIFT code use is dependent on the requirements of the receiving country.
  • Your remittance will pass through the correspondent bank(s) based on the remittance currency.
  • If you're making a transfer to the UK or Australia where the remittance currency is the same as the local currency (e.g., transfer to Australia with remittance currency in AUD), you'll need to indicate the Sort Code for UK and the Bank State Branch (BSB) Code for Australia. In this scenario, you should not use SWIFT code; otherwise, the payment may be returned.
  • If you're making a transfer to the UK or Australia where the remittance currency is different from the local currency (e.g., transfer to the UK with remittance currency in USD), you'll need to indicate the SWIFT code of your beneficiary bank. In this case, you should not use the Sort Code (for the UK) or the BSB Code (for Australia); otherwise, the payment may be returned.
  • Correspondent banks and recipient may apply fees/charges on top of HSBC's remittance fee. Should payments be returned for any reason, the returned amount will be net of all fees. Learn more here.

Important reminders on IBAN:

  • An IBAN is required when sending payments to bank accounts in the Eurozone and UAE.
  • It is a unique identifier linked to individual accounts, and varies in length per country up to 34 alphanumeric characters
  • If you’re making a payment to an account in the Eurozone or UAE, you’ll need to indicate in your instruction the recipient’s IBAN in the ‘Account Number’ field; otherwise, the payment may be returned.
